Sir, – The start of work on the new interconnector between Ireland and the UK got widespread coverage in the Irish media, including in your own publication.

However, an important fact that was not highlighted was that this infrastructure is largely funded by the European Union. Of the €600 million cost, EirGrid received a loan of €300 million from the European Investment Bank and a grant of more than €100 million from the European Commission.

Further private investment was impossible without this European funding.

No wonder many Irish people question EU policies, when their end effects are hidden from them. – Yours, etc,
