Madam, - Your editorial of January 26th, "Divisions Over Iran", highlighted how the European Union is attempting to resolve the issue of Iran's nuclear weapon programme through negotiations.

It would have been useful to note that Iran, in common with some other Middle Eastern states, does not recognise Israel's right to exist.

Hence Iran's programme is really about the threat to the existence of a legitimate and democratic state within the international order.

The EU leaders and citizens have their right to formulate an independent foreign policy stance on the Iran issue, but it will not change the fundamental fact that Israel is entitled to defend itself from the threat of nuclear annihilation under international law.

Therefore, if the choice on the Iran issue is between "transatlantic tensions" or the destruction of Israel, I think the US and Israel will definitely be going for the former. - Yours, etc.,
