England and the future of the UK

Sir, – I note with interest your editorial under the heading "England and the future of the union" (April 29th).

I have no doubt that England has a much better future outside the union than within it. At the moment the English have to endure university fees and prescription charges of which the Scots and the Welsh are free. Indeed, the English are less well treated by Scottish universities in respect of university fees than others in the European Union.

The English had no say by way of vote in the referendum on the future of the union held in Scotland on September 18th, 2014.

The Irish above all nations ought to appreciate the desire of the English for independence from the union given the tragic history of Irish home rule from Gladstone and Parnell onwards. – Yours, etc,
