Sir, - In response to the letter from Mr Jim Fitzsimons MEP (October 9th), your readers should note that under the Consumer Credit Act of 1995 I have responsibility for the regulation of charges imposed by credit institutions.
I have already indicated to the institutions that it is my intention not to allow any increases in foreign currency transaction charges in the run-up to a single European currency. I would like also to assure consumers that I will do my utmost to ensure that in all respects the interests of consumers will be protected in this process. - Yours, etc.,
