The evidence of the continuing damage caused by the disaster is painfully obvious in any Belarus orphanage. The irreparable malformations blighting so many of the children born even 20 years after the event are a stark warning that the effects of radiation caused by nuclear accidents do not fade away but deform the gene pool for generations to come.

By drawing attention to current attempts to minimise the long-term effects of Chernobyl, Adi Roche is doing us all a great service. - Yours, etc,
