Madam, - Reading An Irishman's Diary (December 9th) one has to feel sympathy for Kevin Myers as he agonises about the evidence that some humans actually do eat other humans, and, what's more horrifying, that some human actually offer themselves up to be eaten.

Surely there is nothing as scary and awesome as the human mind and the lengths it will go in the pursuit of pleasure.

As a vegetarian, with more than 30 years of eating only vegetables and nuts, etc. - and loving it - I harbour the belief, against all the odds, that, before the world disappears into a black hole, all humans will have embraced vegetarianism and will have given up eating animals (and each other).

When I tell people I am a vegetarian they often give me a look which says "this dame's a looney". I agree, I am somewhat eccentric. But surely most vegetarians are harmless folk with the notable exception of Hitler (and he probably ate humans behind closed doors). Many Buddhists are vegetarians and George Bernard Shaw is a famous one . However, whatever the merits of vegetarianism, eating people is definitely wrong! - Yours, etc.,
