Sir, - Two recent letters (April 26th/27th) justly criticise the proposed LRT plan. First I believe it was too academic, in that any real benefits for the Dublin traffic maelstrom were not evident. Then, what protests might arise in the residential areas along the route? And what of conflict with public transport (which it is intended to minimise)? Then, will it really cope with the increasing wish for private cars? This was evident from the sales optimism in your recent "Motoring Today".

Now if EU funding for LUAS is available, why not use it for a more basic use i.e., re open the old Harcourt Street Bray line and run a LRT on this route (or what is left of it). This whole area is now highly developed with dwellings using cars going citywise. It should ease south city conditions, now festering with private cars.

The oddest side of this scheme is that it only covers South Dublin. What of the North? It could be that DART steps in where LUAS tears to tread. - Yours, etc.,
