Madam, - Having sailed around the Mizen on many occasions I write to say that the small bay between the Mizen and the Three Castles Head is one of the nastiest and least overlooked pieces of shoreline in the State. It is a small bay surrounded by high cliffs. Indeed it was in this area that CJ Haughey was wrecked many years ago.
Strong tidal currents and a massive overfall make it a very unfriendly piece of coast and sea. Were it not that the lighthouse-keepers in the Mizen lighthouse were keeping a lookout, he and his crew would probably not have been rescued.
Shortly thereafter the manned lighthouse service was discontinued and this State lost the last remnant of a coastwatch service which the lighthouse-keepers had provided. The result is the rampant, unobserved drug-running into such places as we have heard of this week.
- Yours, etc,
KC CONDON, Crab Lane, Blackrock Road, Cork.
