Sir, – Listening to all the politicians speaking glibly about using the National Pension Fund to stimulate growth in the Irish economy raises questions about the future long-term viability of the Irish pensions and social welfare system.

Anybody remember the furrowed brows and concerned discussion over how Ireland could meet the future pension and social welfare needs of an increasingly ageing population pre the setting up of the National Pension Fund in 2001?

This pension fund was to be used from 2025 to solve the consequent financial problems. Now that the pension fund is being used up what’s going to happen from 2025 and onwards?

Are we all going to have to say young until this pension fund is replenished? – Yours, etc,
