Decline in house prices

Sir, – The graph showing the decline in Irish property prices is bad enough (Home News, September 27th)

Sir, – The graph showing the decline in Irish property prices is bad enough (Home News, September 27th). However, if you extend the axes of the graph, the results are catastrophic. If the downward trend in property prices continues at just the current rate, then the value of Irish houses and apartments will fall to zero around November 2018. This will bring a whole new meaning to the expression “negative equity” from 2019. Please remind me again what the Government is doing to boost the Irish housing market? – Yours, etc,

A chara, – Why are the obscene 2007 house prices being repeatedly used in media reports as some reasonable measurement against this welcome drop in prices? Surely the current prices indicate something more sustainable and beneficial to all citizens in the long term? I look forward to witnessing a corresponding drop in rental prices. Hey, I can dream, can’t I? – Is mise,
