Madam, - Reading Eoin McMahon's letter of 20th August, I was struck by the contemptuous term he uses to describe the positions of both the Irish Penal Reform Trust and the Governor of Mountjoy Prison on penal reform, namely a "liberal blancmange".
This contempt puzzled me. On several occasions, I have heard the PDs describe themselves as "liberals". After all, are they not members of the European Liberal and Democratic Radical Party? Is this contempt for liberal values the real reason for the party's failure to run any candidates in the European Parliament Elections last June? - Yours, etc.,
