Sir, - Medb Ruane (Opinion, November 9th) was highly critical, and rightly so, of the violation of women's rights under the Islamic regime in Iran. Indeed, in the run-up to Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Iran, concerns were voiced as to how Irish women could be expected to be treated in such a strict and discriminatory state.

However, let us not forget that our own Government wishes to introduce legislation which also seeks to subjugate women under the auspices of the proposed abortion legislation. This Act seeks to enshrine in our Constitution the belief that women cannot be trusted to make the right decision in a situation which directly affects only them. In Ireland, like Iran, women do not have full autonomy over their bodies. Quite a parallel. - Yours, etc.,
