Sir, - A friend recently decided to take up shooting and in order to purchase a shotgun he was first required to acquire a gun licence.
There is no such requirement when purchasing cars, yet one bad decision by an inexperienced driver can lead to the death or injury of a family of six. My friend would have to load his gun three times to achieve the same result. The fact remains that cars are the most potentially lethal piece of machinery that the average person comes in contact with on a regular basis and permission to drive one should be taken far more seriously than it is. - Yours, etc.,Paul Gordon, Headford Road, Galway.
