Madam, – The Safefood “Stop the Spread” campaign is to be welcomed (Home News, May 11th). It aims to educate individuals that they may be overweight by measuring their waistline.
However, according to the Faculty of Public Health (UK) effective health improvement is comprised of three synergistic interventions; education, enablement and enforcement. Without enablement (always) and enforcement (sometimes), education alone is unlikely to be effective.
People will have fun measuring their waists and for some hopefully it will make a difference. But please note VAT was reduced on vending machine products and takeaway food last week without a whisper. This is enabling and enforcing in the wrong direction. – Yours, etc,
