Sir, - The controversy about tax and credit unions evoked much coverage in newspapers and also on radio and television. In the wider context of credit union operations, however, does the media provide a fair and balanced view of financial options for savings and loans?
Many newspaper features on personal finance publicise facilities available from the banking and insurance sectors but ignore credit unions and their co-operative ethos. For example, a newspaper article on borrowing for car purchase did not mention credit unions as a potential source of loans. Readers were advised to "shop around and do their sums" but were not alerted to the credit union option.
The media should redress its own apparent lack of balance and bias against co-operative savings and loans. - Yours, etc.,
Anthony P. Quinn, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
