Madam, – Having my words "scrutinised" by Peter Murtagh (Opinion, May 18th) has exposed my bias – I admit to believing Willie and Mary Corduff. Your scrutiny seems to emerge from an equally biased perspective. You appear to be taking a position. The auld Timesis back again. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – There is some doubt as to the veracity of the injuries inflicted on Willie Corduff in the Glengad incident referred to by Peter Murtagh ( Irish Times, May 18th). Any visitor to Castlebar hospital would have seen these injuries close up. All injuries were on the left side, from facial swelling to leg bruises. The ankle injury was the most noticeable where having removed his left boot his attackers struck him there with a stone.
These injuries were not visible to Peter Wilcock. They were visible to this visitor. If Willie Corduff has not filed a formal complaint it is that he has lost all faith in the system that allows such assaults to go unpunished. Such assaults on him and on others have taken place before. – Is mise,
