Madam, – Robert Dillon (April 7th) needs a reality check if he is “truly shocked” by the events unfolding following the Financial Regulator’s move on Quinn Insurance. To see the various groups in the community come out and support efforts to save vital jobs is hardly “shocking”.

Furthermore, to refer to those people who travelled from all over the region to support the company and its workers as a “personal rent-a-mob” is deplorable.

The large amount of workers directly employed by Quinn group and whose jobs are now in jeopardy, were joined by a great many people who have no direct link with the company, but who recognise that if these jobs are lost, the Cavan, Fermanagh, Leitrim and wider area will be decimated.

The figure of 5,500 jobs has been mentioned. The reality is that a multiple of this number of jobs are at risk in the region if Quinn Insurance goes into permanent administration.

I can understand how people who are far removed from this situation might assume that Seán Quinn is just another high roller who is finally getting his comeuppance, but the truth is somewhat different.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the march myself as I had to spend more than half the day in an A E room, waiting to get an X-ray and an assessment which together took about 20 minutes.

No sign of the HSE going into administration though, or is it even regulated? – Yours, etc,

Madam, – This country amazes me. Less than a year ago we bemoaned the inactivity of the then financial regulator in reining in the actions of Anglo Irish Bank. This week our newly appointed Financial Regulator was meeting a group of stakeholders amid increasing pressure and condemnation over his recent censuring of Quinn Insurance.

Had the previous regulator taken similar action in relation to Anglo Irish Bank, I am sure there would have been a similar reaction. However, once the dust had settled we might well today be in far healthier financial circumstances than we are currently experiencing. – Yours, etc,
