Madam, – I was surprised by your Editorial (April 29th) in which you remind us that gardaí must not join a political party and that they take an oath to uphold the Constitution and laws of the land, and then you criticise one of their representatives for speaking out against what has been done to the citizens of this country by Fianna Fáil. Nothing said or implied in the speech could be considered a breach of their oath.

Generally, all police forces find themselves mopping up or containing the policy failures of their government.

Seeing as the “the buck” stops nowhere in Government, it eventually slithers to a halt at the feet of the ordinary gardaí. They, like all citizens, have every reason to feel “angry, betrayed and disillusioned” at the priorities of “the Republican Party”.

That the Minister for Justice did not want to hear criticism from the Garda Representative Association says more about him than the GRA. – Yours, etc,
