Sir, - After President McAleese's taking of communion in Christ Church some years ago I had thought that the final words on this subject had been written, so I am bemused by the recent outpourings.
Far from being some kind of sinister form of proselytism used to entrap unwary Catholics, the words used by Church of Ireland clergy before service are an explanation of the Church of Ireland position on intercommunion, and are given as a matter of courtesy and a means of welcome to those in the congregation who are attending a particular church for the first time. This is particularly true of the cathedrals and larger churches, whose congregations, especially in summer, are increased by visitors from abroad, many from other nationalities and denominations other than Anglican. Catholics are in a minority, if present at all.
If Catholics are present at a Church of Ireland service they are well able to understand the words used to explain the Church of Ireland's position on intercommunion and can remain in their seats if they wish.
This preoccupation with rules and regulations sidelines the very reason for our attendance in church. - Yours, etc.,
