Sir, - The cover of the Education & Living supplement (September 9th), which carried the main heading "Conquering dyslexia", went on to signpost a page 10 article on distance learning with the sentence: "You can't go to college for logistical resaons"; moreover, that article appeared on page 12.
As for the cover story on dyslexia, we were told that the disorder "primarilty interfered with the acquisition of print literacy - reading, writing and spelling" and that a small number of replies to a questionnaire indicated a zero awareness of the condition and its "affect" on students. The article refers both to "SLD" (Specific Learning Disability) and "SDL" (?) and, in a report on a survey, stated that "only a fraction, 3 per cent . . ." (?) of males surveyed were working in clerical jobs. We learned, too, that "respondants" to that questionnaire came from all socio-economic classes, and of the perception that dyslexia is a middle-class "syndorome". With help like this from such an eminent newspaper, one is tempted to ask what hope there is for those unfortunate to find themselves affected by what appears to be a serious disorder. - Yours, etc., Tim O'Leary,
Cabinteely,
Dublin 18.
