COMMON EXPECTATIONS

Sir, - Your columnist, Fintan O'Toole (May 3rd), fails to see the wood from the trees

Sir, - Your columnist, Fintan O'Toole (May 3rd), fails to see the wood from the trees. What Mary Harney, the PD leader, is advocating is not a low wage, low tax economy but something that we all have a right to expect - that is, a decent take home pay at the end of the week.

We have huge unemployment figures despite a so called economic boom and have had a further announcement of a rise in the number of jobless on the day of Mr O'Toole's article. Very few working people are able to get around the problem of low take home pay by getting huge expense accounts like the directors of semi state companies.

May I suggest that Mr O'Toole confine his blinkered analysis to theatre criticism and I hope that this will not upset someone else who tries to live in the real world, namely, Hugh Leonard. - Yours, etc.,
