Sir, - I cannot convey the frustration and acute disappointment I feel at the recent planning application for apartments to be built adjacent to the Round Tower in Clondalkin. To say that the tower is one of our national treasures is an understatement. To have it reviled by the construction of a concrete monstrosity next to it is a betrayal of our country's history and heritage. We, together with the Clondalkin Tourism Taskforce, are trying to attract people to Clondalkin to enjoy its historic ambience. The Round Tower, as its central feature, is paramount to our success. If we continue to disregard our cultural heritage people will stop visiting this country, and we will have killed "the goose that laid the golden egg".We therefore demand that South Dublin County Council purchase this site immediately and build a heritage/tourism information centre on it. - Yours, etc., Alan Glenn Phillips, Secretary,Clondalkin Heritage Trust,Cherrywood Drive,Dublin 22.
