Cleaning up the country

Madam, – On St Patrick’s Day, I drove from Dublin to Ashford in Co Wicklow. From the start of the motorway section of the N11 at Shankill to the turn-off for Ashford, the blanket of litter all along the hedgerows was shocking, and just as bad for the first mile at the Ashford slip road.

The following day, I sought to raise the matter with Wicklow County Council. Its elaborate website understandably highlights Wicklow’s designation as the Garden of Ireland, and its Environment Section spells out a variety of measures to “make the Garden even greener”. Yes, there is also an e-mail link where people can alert the Environment Section about litter problems.

I duly e-mailed my note of concern, and fully acknowledged that the primary responsibility for the problem lies with our mindless, dirty citizens who throw their waste materials on the roads. I am still awaiting a response! – Yours etc,

STEPHEN O’BYRNES,
