Sir, - Surely His Eminence, Cardinal Daly, is not suggesting that the church follow the State in establishing procedures for child care (April 29th). It is for Christ's church to set the highest examples of compassion and grace and to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. Children, however, are children of God, and therefore entitled to respect and dignity from the servants of God, i.e. religious.
To foist responsibility for abuses onto State guidelines is unsatisfactory. His Eminence might dry his hands and start over with accountability, reparations and provisions for counselling for victims of institutionalised abuses.
