CENTRAL AFRICA UNDER THREAT

A chara, - Once more, on our television screens, we are witnessing another humanitarian disaster in Central Africa

A chara, - Once more, on our television screens, we are witnessing another humanitarian disaster in Central Africa. Since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the signs were apparent for another imminent disaster. Humanitarian aid was provided in abundance, but no political or judicial solutions were offered.

It has taken an international tribunal up to two years to indict 19 people. Rwanda's overcrowded prisons contain up to 80,000 people in appalling conditions. Since 1994, Rwanda has had no judicial system. The refugees are afraid to return because of guilt or fear of reprisals.

The international community appears to have no interest in Central Africa - neither Rwanda or Burundi have resources of any monetary value. The global village does not seem to include Central Africa. Do we have to witness the deaths of up to another million people, as in 1994, before any action is taken? If we continue to ignore Rwanda, Zaire and Burundi we are condoning crimes against humanity which lessen us all as human beings. - Le meas. -
