Sir, – I refer to the article “The credit crunch hits Carrick” (Weekend Review, August 20th) on Carrick on Shannon.
While Carrick on Shannon was mentioned at the beginning of the article, I was infuriated at the subsequent references to Carrick. This shortening of the town’s official name would probably be acceptable if weren’t for the fact that Carrick is also short for Carrickmacross, Carrick on Suir, Carrickfergus and is also the name of a village in south west Donegal.
Please abandon this tabloid trend of shortening names and use the full and proper name of the town every time. – Yours, etc,
