Sir, - I read with interest the feature by Chris Dooley (From the South East, March 24th) about the majestic railings that have bounded the splendid Carlow courthouse for the past 160 years. I worked in the circuit court office in Carlow between 1964 and 1967 and I always took pride in showing the building to any of my friends who happened to visit me during those years.
It would surely amount to nothing short of an act of official vandalism were the OPW to remove any part of these railings. The side entrance to the courthouse as featured in your photograph is more than adequate to accommodate the passage of vehicles.
It is to be hoped that the people of Carlow will succeed in resisting any wanton damage to their communal heritage. - Yours, etc., Donal McLoone,
