Sir, - Mr Conor Faughnan states (January 4th) that the results of the AA survey show that "Dublin is not the `car swamped' city many believe". This is a ridiculous statement. Anyone who works or lives in the city realises that not only is the excessive number of cars responsible for the chronic congestion, but also for the city's air and noise pollution, many of the accidents, and generally making the city a more unpleasant place.

Of course we need proper public transport, but we also need more pedestrianised areas, cycle-lanes and traffic-calming measures so that we can challenge Copenhagen as the city with the lowest ratio of cars to people, and the capital city of cycling in Europe. - Yours etc.,
