Madam, - James Annet (February 8th) opposes any contact between Ian Paisley and the Taoiseach or President - he is free to do so. However, I think he reveals more about himself and like-minded unionists when he anticipates a "fall from grace within the unionist community" and reminds us that this has happened to "every unionist leader since O'Neill".

If every unionist leader has fallen from grace, then the unionists need to reconsider either their choice of leaders or their political outlook. They are the ones who choose their leaders. It would appear that, having chosen their leaders, they then refuse to be led. - Yours, etc,
