Sir, - In his letter (August 13th) Mr Stephen Brophy appears to confuse two separate issues - the cutting of foreign aid, and the question which I raised about getting involved in a war between the US and Iraq.

I most certainly do not support the regime of Saddam Hussein, and I sympathise with the Iraqi people in their suffering, but I do not think that dropping bombs on them is the answer! As usual, it is the innocent civilians who would suffer most in a war - and, perhaps, some of those civilians would be Irish if we support the Bush war games; as Mr Lugaid Brugha rightly points out, Bush has a debt to pay to the defence contractors.

No, Mr Brophy, I cannot agree that going to war, in any circumstances, is a way of declaring our nation's maturity. - Yours, etc.,
