Auction politics and a general election

Sir, – With the general election not very far off, can I ask that the political parties think long and hard about the content of the manifestos they will be announcing? Auction politics no longer works. The ability to change and adapt to the direct effects of the ever-changing and fast-paced world economy is what is needed. Making costly and sometimes undeliverable promises must be a thing of the past. Politicians may say they have learned the lessons of the recent crash, but all the indications so far is that they are going to ignore them. – Yours, etc,

PAUL KEENAN,

Killiney, Co Dublin.
