Sir, – Richard Morton lambasts Dr Masterson for stating “the onus is on the atheist to prove that God does not exist, not on the believer to prove that he does” (October 27th). There are, however, four main points for us to consider about the question of the existence of God: 1. The complexity of our planet points to a deliberate designer who not only created our universe, but sustains it today.
2. The universe had a start – what caused it? Even the “Big Bang” theory no longer has widespread support.
3. The universe operates by uniform laws of nature. Why does it? Freak event of nature or deliberate design? 4. The DNA code. Why is this so? For the believer, it is not biblical exegesis but rather scientific discoveries which will ultimately support the idea of the existence of God. However this “idea” has been implanted in the mind and heart of humans so that “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy”.
The opening chapters of the book of Genesis do not give us a fully scientific account of the existence of the universe but the words make us wonder at the complexity of the world and humble us at the terrible beauty of it all.
At the end of the day, it is humility not scientific arrogance, which distinguishes the believer from the atheist. – Yours, etc,
