Madam, – It was interesting to read of Archbishop Desmond Tutu praising the Irish people for their support of the apartheid struggle in South Africa ( The Irish Times, February 14th and 16th).
Sadly, his speeches at the Mansion House and at NUI in Galway made no mention of the late Archbishop Denis Hurley of Durban, an outspoken opponent of apartheid who should be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the struggle against oppression, his concern for the poor and his commitment to a more just and peaceful society in South Africa.
A plaque to his memory and ancestry can be found in Abbeystrewery cemetery in Skibbreen, Co Cork. – Yours, etc,
