Madam, – I read that the chief executive of Anglo Irish Bank is currently remunerated at the rate of €974,000 per annum (Cantillon, April 2nd).
This organisation can scarcely be described as functioning, since it has exited normal banking operations and will be run down over the next 10 years.
This suggests that the salary highlighted above is not only excessive, but is a burden on the taxpayer who will have to pay for this.
With about 500,000 people unemployed in Ireland, a number of very capable people could easily be found to manage this dysfunctional organisation, and to do it, say, for a salary of €95,000 per annum rather than the excessive remuneration mentioned above.
