Madam, – Dennis McIntyre (May 3rd ) makes a strong case for a research centre to be dedicated to Bram Stoker on the centenary of his death, April 2012. A laudable aim, if ambitious.
We live in a time of modest proposals. For 25 years, a plaque commemorating the Dublin-born author of Dracula and other ghost stories and thrillers adorned the wall of 30 Kildare Street, where he once lived.
This was put up in July 1983, by Dublin Tourism, with the support of the Bram Stoker Society. The plaque was unveiled by Ann Stoker, Bram’s grand-daughter.
In late 2008, this plaque was removed. It hardly just flew away! The building is now owned by Shelbourne Developments and leased to The Hospital Group.
At a minimum, as we advance towards Bram’s centenary year, let us have the plaque back, or a successor installed on the spot where it was widely known to Dubliners. – Yours, etc,
