Ageism On The Bus

Sir, - Niamh Moore's recent brave but futile efforts to help a feeble old man exercise his civil right to board a Dublin bus driven by a public servant (June 27th) should not be shrugged off by the physically fit as one of the disadvantages of living in a city.

That old man would be transported with delight if he experienced the service on buses in the San Francisco/Berkeley and Oakland areas of the US. When these one woman/man driver buses pull in at a bus stop, if there is anyone unable to mount the bus step, the driver lowers a small platform to lift the person safely on to the bus and, before taking off, checks that the passenger is safely seated. We witnessed this civilised behaviour to the elderly and infirm so often that it became obvious that good public relations was of the utmost importance to those who run bus services in the San Francisco area. It's about time that the well-paid administrators of Dublin Bus adopted a similar policy so that the elderly and infirm are treated with the respect and consideration they deserve on Dublin buses. Well done, Niamh Moore! - Yours, etc., Patricia Wall,
