Madam, – As a shareholder and a citizen I am like many people, outraged at the gross incompetence of the senior executives in our banks.

Shareholders have lost almost everything and taxpayers must pick up a huge cost.

There is, however, a historic opportunity: as a small part of the transaction between Bank of Ireland plc and Ireland, the bank should be required to pass ownership of the old Parliament Building in College Green to the State.

The predecessors of Bank of Ireland acquired the building at an opportune time for them. Now is the time for the building to return to the people of Ireland. Bank of Ireland plc is not worthy of the building.

In the ownership of the State (and when we have the money), it would make a truly great national museum, art gallery or library.
