Sir, – Many worthy suggestions have been put forward in your columns to name the new Liffey bridge. I would like to propose “Troy Bridge” in memory of the promising Irish tenor who died tragically at the age of 35. Next month will be the 50th anniversary of his death, which denied us a veritable successor to McCormack.
Dermot Troy was born in Tinahely, Co Wicklow and raised in Inchicore, Dublin. Before getting the break to pursue his musical career he worked in the former Findlater wine/grocery store on Upper O’Connell Street.
Commemorating Dermot Troy would, by association, also acknowledge all those who, for one reason or another, left us without realising their potential. – Yours, etc,
