Madam, – While it is not the function of news publications to boost morale, is it really necessary to have The Irish Timesreminding the under-25s that they are the "lost generation" (Weekend Review, November 7th)? The so- called lost generation is not lost. Amelia Eaheart was lost, Indonesian families were lost in the tsunami of December 2004 and whole Brazilian tribes were lost when European settlers brought diseases such as small pox to their homelands.

The current generation of under-25s’ aspirations have been altered and their ambitions somewhat curtailed – they are not queuing up for soup kitchens or being forced to carve a canal in central America. A sense of perspective is required, especially from educated journalists who should be able to discern the difference between challenging times and truly tragic times. – Yours, etc,
