Madam, - Brian Whiteside asks (April 26th), apropros of "à la carte" Catholics, why such people do not simply choose another religion which fits their philosophy more comfortably. I cannot speak for other à la carte Catholics, but from all I hear and read in the media I can identify with a lot of them, especially on contraception.

Personally I want to remain in the Catholic Church because I love it. I was born into it and I do not want to betray it over something that is not fundamental to the faith, such as contraception or priestly celibacy.

If, however, the Catholic Church's Hierarchy, in its wisdom, decided to excommunicate me I would accept that as a sign from the Holy Spirit that I could serve God with greater integrity by seeking membership of one of the other Christian churches.

This is my opinion and I trust no scandal will be taken by my voicing it as I have in this letter. Believe me, I intend no harm to anyone, fellow Christians or the Catholic Hierarchy. - Yours, etc,
