A great Leap off the map

Madam, – I was disheartened and dismayed upon catching first sight of the map on page 3 of your West Cork supplement (June 15th). In it, you have committed the cardinal sin of placing the village of Union Hall on the N71 between Rosscarbery (not “Rosscarberry”) and Skibbereen.

As someone who has lived in the village of Leap all my life, I feel utter dismay that our village should be excluded from the map and replaced by a village that, while attractive in its own right, does not command the same centrality as Leap. The village serves as an important nodal point between the villages of Glandore and Union Hall for transport purposes (basically, we have a regular bus service to and from Cork and Skibbereen) and commercial purposes (the only petrol pumps in the tri-village area). The village also lies at the head of Glandore Harbour, a harbour that has been compared by visitors from numerous countries as ranging from an inland lake to a mini fjord.

I feel it important to let your readers know of the omission of the villages of Leap and Glandore (despite the Glandore-Rosscarbery road making an appearance on your map), and that they might feel it worthy of stopping on their journey westwards to take in (if only briefly) the majestic spectacle that is the harbour at full tide. – Yours, etc,

JOHN O’DONOVAN,
