Sir, - Robert Dunlop (March 28th) says that Stanley Kubrick "had the integrity to withdraw his own film when he sensed the damage it could do". Perhaps then, Mr Dunlop could explain why it was withdrawn only in the UK and could still be shown elsewhere in the world. Only the late Mr Kubrick could have given the true answer to this, but considering the knee-jerk reaction of the British press and the death threats made against him, I believe he had no choice but to bow to media pressure.

If Mr Dunlop does not wish to see this film in the cinema, I respect his views and suggest that he not buy a ticket. However, if he wishes to dictate which films I can and cannot watch, that is a decision I would prefer to make myself. - Yours, etc.,

Mark Coffey, Castle Court, Killiney, Co Dublin.
