Madam, – Councillor Ciarán Cuffe’s article on infrastructure (Opinion, October 28th) is introduced with a standfirst stating that Metro North “will benefit the city for generations to come”, omitting to mention which city he is referring to.

Of course all but the most uninformed of observers know that he is referring to Dublin, but such references appear almost on a daily basis in national newspapers and on RTÉ. We hear constant references to “the” city council, “the” airport, “the” chamber of commerce, without Dublin ever being mentioned.

Many may dismiss my comments as pedantry, or provincial hypersensitivity. However, I do feel a national newspaper should insist in its editorial rules that any opening reference to Dublin should initially refer to the city by name, or else by means of a formula such as “Ireland’s capital”.

Those of us in the other cities – and elsewhere outside the Pale – would be very grateful for such a courtesy!
