Meeting Ireland’s energy needs

Nuclear power

Sir, – For those hoping for a nuclear plant to be developed in Ireland (Letters, February 26th), the UK government now predicts that the cost of its plant currently under construction at Hinckley Point has skyrocketed from a projected £18 billion to £46 billion. It won’t be commissioned until at least 2031 and apparently they are planning to develop another one with a levy to be tacked on to the bills of consumers to pay for it in perpetuity. These are real costs for proven technologies and not theoretical costs and unproven technologies for aspirational modular plants mooted for Irish needs. – Yours, etc,

Co Galway.
