Sir, – You report on a welcome €1.4 billion investment in cycle routes (News, January 11th). An ensuing commitment by the local councils to use this fund prudently would be equally welcome, specifically if they undertook to repair the existing network before rushing to add to it. I have written repeatedly to Fingal County Council for repair to damaged cycleways, but to no avail. Some were constructed poorly, and were never fit for purpose. Others simply cannot be used, forcing cyclists out onto adjoining roads (to the annoyance of motorists). Investment to date has not delivered fully as intended in our local council area. Let’s hope repair and maintenance will feature this time if the new fund is to deliver usable cycle routes. – Yours, etc,
