Sir, – Recently, in The Irish Times, I saw a reference to a “stunning eagle”. Immediately, I saw an image of a powerful white-tailed bird zooming from the sky to maul a helpless rabbit in Killarney National Park. No, nothing so dramatic. It was a score in Ryder Cup golf. I have also seen references recently to “a stunning contemporary home”, “stunning scenery at Glendalough” and “stunning wildlife shots”. I have seen all these but never got stunned.
The only real stunning experience I can remember is when I got a big farmer’s fist right into my face when playing in a junior football championship match against Aughnamullen in the distant past. Stunning as it should be! – Yours, etc,
