Time for an ‘urban alliance’ of TDs

City citizens need a voice

Sir, – There has been much comment recently about the poor state of Dublin city. Responsibility for the care, upkeep and improvement of the city lies squarely with the city council and its administrators.

A primary requirement for future city managers should be a commitment to live with their families in the most deprived area of Dublin, the north inner city, for the duration of their appointment. One suspects that, if they and their children had to navigate those streets on a daily basis, administrators would spend less time pontificating about cycle lanes and more time addressing the chronic social problems which lie at the root of recent headlines.

Rural people are successfully represented at national level by a cross-party alliance of rural TDs. It is long past time for a similar “urban alliance” to represent city dwellers too. – Yours, etc,

JOHN THOMPSON,
