Sir, – Noreen Bowden’s article (“Cutting RTÉ Radio 1 longwave is a slap in the face for elderly emigrants”, April 14th) outlines the difficulties which will be experienced by elderly listeners in Britain when long wave broadcasting ceases.
Many seniors will have problems accessing newer technologies as Bowden illustrates.
I objected to the moves to close the longwave service in 2014 because there were and still are compelling reasons for maintaining the service. When I visit relatives in mountainous areas of Wales, such as the Brecon Beacons, many rural areas do not have adequate internet coverage. Longwave is the only means of radio reception. One of my sisters lives in a remote area of the Scottish Highlands. She will suffer just the same.
Being over 75 years old, I cannot hire a car in Ireland despite having an impeccable driving record. Now I shall lose another opportunity to stay in touch with the land of my birth. – Yours, etc,
