Up for debate

Distinguished participants

Sir, – Each year, whether I’m at home or overseas, I enjoy following your reporting on the annual Irish Times Debate Final. Congratulations to this year’s winners, runners-up and participants (News, February 18th).

I fear that your list of notable former winners that is included in these annual reports hasn’t been updated in about 20 years. As such the prominent public roles played by former winners in Irish life today is not fully reflected. I’d at least add to your list Attorney General Rossa Fanning (individual winner 1999), Senators Tom Clonan (individual winner 1990) and Rónán Mullen (team winner 2000), Ambassadors Paul Gleeson (individual winner 1998) and Maeve Collins (team winner 1989), Supreme Court Judge Brian Murray (team winner 1984), High Court judges Cian Ferriter (individual winner 1992), David Keane (team winner 1986), David Holland (team winner 1985), Deirdre Murphy (individual winner 1976), Charles Meenan (team winner 1981), and editor and broadcaster Ian Kehoe (team winner 2004).

While Donal O’Donnell is noted in your article as a Supreme Court judge, he is now of course the Chief Justice, and is I believe the first Irish Times Debate winner to hold that honour. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL WICKHAM MORIARTY,
