Wood-burning stoves, heating costs and air pollution

Consider the alternatives

Sir, – I was disappointed to read the article “Would installing a wood-burning stove lower our heating costs?” (Residential, December 7th).

No mention was made of the pollution effect of stoves. We know that even modern high-efficiency eco-stoves emit 450 times the air pollution of a gas boiler. It isn’t a new or minority view that stoves are increasingly seen as not suitable for urban areas if an alternative is available. – Yours, etc,
